Symbiosis

Material Story

From the animal world to the plant kingdom, we explore, in bite-sized science segments, the extraordinary biological interactions between different organisms, known as symbiosis. With its unique green and golden hues, like the three-dimensional print by Camac Arti Grafiche, a lichen grows on a rock through a mutualistic relationship in which both partners benefit. The linen canvas by ITS Artea evokes the remarkable shapes of the colourful bracket fungus, while a small oxpecker perches on the back of a buffalo, whose majestic horns call to mind the elegant tie by Andreu.Barcelona. The bird feeds on the parasites of the bovine, keeping it cleaned in return. The flocked Delfi pattern spreads across the green canvas like the membranous pelt lichen growing on the soil, enriching it with nitrogen. Tufts of green algae develop clinging to the sea rocks, echoing the warm geometry of the Kaleidos Moda scarf. The colourful Sandra B buttons are arranged to recreate the image of a cheerful clownfish, whose life within a sea anemone is an example of obligate mutualism, as both are highly dependent on one another for survival. Another oxpecker lands on an antelope, hoping to find nourishment on its coat, beige like the alpaca blend by Nimue – Compagnia della Lana, while the floral satin by Josef Otten & TDI is tinged with the colours of a bee collecting pollen from a flower – feeding itself while contributing to the cross-pollination of the plant. A butterfly also feeds on nectar, aiding plant reproduction and evoking the refined lace by Jean Bracq. Finally, the Olimpias Fabrics twill recalls the distinctive diagonal direction in which the delicious elephant ear mushroom grows on trees before being picked and cooked in a tasty autumn dish.
