Land art

Material Story

Immersed in nature and rich in symbolic meaning, environmental art captivates through its silent monumentality, capable of landscaping scenes of rare emotional intensity. In the boundless landscape of Gibellina rises Alberto Burri’s Grande Cretto, whose expanse of concrete seems to absorb the very same shades as the cottons by MTVV Manifatture Tessili Vittorio Veneto. Nearby, the beige and grey fabrics by Destro Fabrics are recomposed into the form of an inuksuk, an ancient stone totem that converses with the forest’s primordial balance. The sinuous line of Sargassum seaweed in Jon Foreman’s work appears to adorn an unspoilt beach, echoing the tones of ribbons by Vostex. At the same time, the virgin wool by Vitale Barberis Canonico lights up in red and grey, translating the powerful chromatic contrast of Labyrinth, the sculptural installation by Belgian duo Gijs and Van Vaerenbergh, which asserts itself in space with architectural force. At London’s Kew Gardens, Simon Gudgeon’s imposing Leaf Spirit mask emerges from the surrounding greenery, reflecting its nuances onto the labels by Fec*Serilabel by Facchinetti. The accessories by Tarducci Massimo, meanwhile, are arranged to evoke the forms and colours of the landscape crossed by The Infinite Bridge by Gjøde & Povlsgaard Arkitekter in Denmark, where architecture and nature merge in a contemplative balance. On the other side of the world, at Instituto Inhotim in Brazil, the oxidised steel beams driven into the ground by Chris Burden give rise to Beam Drop Inhotim, a public artwork that reflects on the industrial impact on the environment with the same formal boldness as the ties by Fumeo Carlo. In the city park of Krasnodar, Russia, the refined embroideries by Jato 1991 – MinervaHub seem to reproduce the landscape shaped by Ken Kelleher’s mirrored-metal sculpture Inner Child, multiplying its reflections and suggestions. On Gozo, in the Maltese archipelago, sand draws concentric patterns that make the warm, neutral shades by Luxury Jersey vibrate. Bringing this journey through art and nature to a close, the linen and cotton by Lanificio Becagli are tinged with beige and cream in a weave of textures that recalls a ploughed field, reminding us how even the simplest landscape can be transformed into a work of art.
