Among colourful façades, unexpected volumes and architecture that seems to defy convention, Bilbao reveals itself as a manifesto of creativity and innovation — a city where art, design and urban planning exist in perfect harmony. The façade of the Hotel Hesperia lights up in a spectrum of colours like a work of urban art, casting its hues across the prints by GM Fabrics. Meanwhile, in the soft morning light, the Iberdrola Tower rises on the horizon and a corner of the Guggenheim Museum catches the first rays of the sun, setting its sinuous surfaces shimmering and finding an echo in the buttons by A.C.M.. Further on, the Convent of the Servants of Jesus surprises with its architectural “skin” of geometry and depth, where light and shadow shape the surface in a refined three-dimensional interplay that recalls the timeless elegance of the classic fabrics by Tessilgodi. Inside the Guggenheim, the experience becomes immersive, and the zips by Oerlikon Riri evoke the monumental forms of The Matter of Time by Richard Serra, whose immense steel ellipses guide visitors through a labyrinth of curves, perspectives and constantly shifting perceptions. Along the banks of the Nervión River stands the historic Casas de la Cava, an elegant Renaissance villa enveloped by the colours of autumn foliage, which seem to be reflected in the fabrics by Hackenberg Textile Group, transforming the landscape into a palette of warm, enveloping tones. Meanwhile, the pinstripes and twills by Stola recall the authentic charm of the Casco Viejo, where wooden balconies and wrought-iron details set the rhythm of the historic streets. Returning towards the Guggenheim, the eye is drawn to Tall Tree & The Eye by Anish Kapoor. Its seventy-three mirrored spheres multiply fragments of sky, city and nature, suggesting reflections and lustres that seem to come alive once more in the buttons by Fimma. A little further on, the ribbons by Société Choletaise de Fabrication seem to sketch the profile of the celebrated Puente de La Salve, recognisable for its monumental red arch conceived by Daniel Buren – a graphic landmark that has become an integral part of the city’s visual identity. Beside the bridge, a sculptural limestone tower creates a connection between the museum and the urban fabric, while the knitwear by Novalansa – Premiertex reinterprets its textures and material nuances. Bringing the journey to a close, the deep, lustrous tones by Prina Tessuti evoke the contemporary atmosphere of dendAZ, the concept store within the Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga that showcases creations by local artists and designers. With its illuminated signage and avant-garde spaces, it serves as a reminder that Bilbao continues to be one of the most captivating capitals of Basque design and European creativity.
