Alaska

Material Story

Amid landscapes sculpted by ice, vast oceans and extraordinary wildlife, Alaska reveals the full splendour of its untamed beauty through a palette of vivid colours and enveloping textures. The journey begins among the imposing icy masses of Hubbard Glacier, where the white and blue tones of the ice reflect their striking geometries in the cotton fabrics by Getzner Textil. Nearby, the zips by Zip Goffredo | ZIP GFD evoke the sign marking the entrance to Alaska along the Klondike Highway, at the Canadian border – a symbolic gateway to a vast and unspoilt land. Across the deep ocean waters, two juvenile American herring gulls glide effortlessly between sea and sky, inspiring the forms and subtle shades by Galeottipiume. In Whittier, the charm of the local architecture comes to life in the distinctive façade of a dark timber hotel, with its steeply pitched roofs and unmistakable octagonal turret, seemingly clad in the twill and gingham patterns by Isla. At the heart of Denali National Park, the celebrated Polychrome Overlook presents a strikingly different landscape: here the snow has yet to claim the terrain, and the hills glow with warm reds, ochres and greens that recall the rich wool fabrics by Sintopel. Nearby, the faux furs by Menchi Tessuti / Pantex appear to draw inspiration from three sea otters floating peacefully on the water's surface. The journey continues to Holgate Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park, where the intense blue of the ice merges with the surrounding rock faces in a dialogue of contrasts echoed in the viscose canvases by Tesj Divisione di Pontoglio. A little further on, the warm furs by Lanificio Guasti reflect the rich tones of a brown bear emerging from the water with its coat still drenched and tousled, perhaps after a successful fishing expedition. Returning to Denali, winter reveals itself in all its grandeur as a pristine blanket of snow envelops mountains and valleys, softening the contours of the landscape and recalling the lightness and comfort of Thindown – Nipi Italia padding. Finally, the virgin wool by Mallalieus seems to encapsulate the colours and character of Creek Street, the historic boardwalk that follows the course of the stream between colourful houses and shimmering reflections, in a land where the power of nature and the warmth of materials exist in perfect harmony, leaving memories that endure long after the journey has come to an end.
