Challenging the skies

Material Story

From religious architecture to panoramic skyscrapers, we explore the ancient desire to challenge the skies that has enabled an increasingly vertical expansion. The magnificent Temple of Divine Admiration has stood since the 9th century in Yunnan, with its angular structure evoking the tweed by AGM. The wool by Luxury Jersey intertwines with other fibres to recreate the mighty masonry of the Friday Mosque. The more geometric and modern construction of the Picasso Tower lends voluminous ribs to the velvet by Duca Visconti di Modrone, while the barré by MTVV Manifatture Tessili Vittorio Veneto dresses the Jumeirah Emirates Towers in turquoise reflections. A lighthouse rises above the choppy sea, brushing the grey sky and inspiring the stripes by Balli Il Lanificio. The Indet Group label takes on the hues of a Manhattan skyscraper surrounded by a pinkish mist. The towering Burj Khalifa is mirrored in the cotton by La Linea, imbuing it with deep shades of blue. The glossy fabric by Lineaessegroup is adorned with vertical ribs like the two dark buildings between which a plane seems to pass. Other glassy grey skyscrapers tint the mélange by Tessitura Rossi, while the Prince of Wales check by Canclini 1925 – Blue 1925 echoes the sky-blue tones of the One World Trade Center in New York, a symbol of American independence and of humanity’s innate instinct to gaze skywards.
